KCC Overview

Kapi'olani Community College, part of the University of Hawaii System, is a state-sponsored, two-year degree-granting academic institution. KCC attracts students from across the U.S. and internationally and serves a diverse student population with widely varying needs. The fully accessible campus includes 20 modern buildings integrated within beautiful and natural surroundings. In addition to offering college credit classes, KCC offers continuing education, training and general interest classes.

Location: Set in a charming residential area of Honolulu on the slopes of Diamond Head crater, just minutes away from world famous Waikiki Beach, Kapi'olani Community College is the nearest community college to the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus.

Student Body: Approximately 6,700 students enrolled in business, health, hospitality, legal and liberal arts degree and certificate programs; nearly 8,000 students in continuing education programs. The student body includes recent high school graduates, transfer students, adults returning to college, single parents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, international students, veterans, etc.

Faculty: More than 350 instructors make up the diverse and innovative faculty who have earned recognition for their research and teaching excellence. A majority of faculty members hold their Masters and many hold the Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field.

Majors: Business Education, Emergency Medical Services, Food Service and Hospitality Education, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Legal Education, Liberal Arts, New Media Arts, and Nursing. [more info]

Degrees and Certificates: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Technical Studies, Certificate of Achievement, Certificate of Completion, Certificate of Competence.

Special Services and Programs: The Special Student Services Office houses several programs to help special needs students achieve equal access to instruction and activities. The Holomua Center offers pre-college and developmental programs in reading, composition, math, and study skills. The Gallaudet Regional Center provides supplemental support for deaf students. KCC offers programs in English for Speakers of Other Languages. An Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa chapter are available for students with exceptional scholastic achievement.

Library and Learning Resources: Students have access to library resources throughout the University of Hawaii system. The KCC Lama Library offers a wide range of reference publications and services, audiovisual equipment, a reserve section, special collections and study rooms.

Supplemental campus learning resource centers include computer, math and science labs. Placement testing, tutorial services, computer-assisted instruction and workshops on a variety of course-related subjects and study skills are also available.

Counseling Services: Counselors provide academic advising for all majors, career exploration, and personal counseling. Counselors meet with students individually, in group sessions, and sponsor workshops and classes. [more info]

Child Care: On-campus child care is available for the children of students, faculty and staff members at the Alani Children's Center. [more info]

Housing: Student dormitories and apartments may be available to Kapi'olani Community College students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. KCC is located in a desirable residential area offering many convenient rental opportunities.

Job Placement: The Maida Kamber Center houses a database of hundreds of employment opportunities for students, assists with resume preparation, interview training, and other job seeking and preparation activities. [more info]

Accreditation: Kapi'olani Community College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Various programs within the college are recognized by corresponding accreditation institutions. [more info]

Financial Aid: A variety of financial aid resources are available to students based on need as well as merit. KCC students were awarded $3,826,238 during the 1999-2000 school year. [more info]
