Service Learning Emphasis

Service-Learning is a tool used in the unlocking of the human imagination. -
Senator Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., Dec. 1st, 2005

Students in many different courses are experiencing the benefits of service learning - of learning beyond the classroom walls. Through service learning, students spend 20 or more hours per semester at community sites gaining understanding of day-to-day issues and contributing to their solutions. This type of hands-on learning can help students:

  • See course theory in action
  • Deepen understanding of course assignments
  • Strengthen critical thinking, information retrieval and technology, quantitative reasoning, oral and written communication skills
  • Gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their community
  • Strengthen self-confidence
  • Test potential career paths
  • Fill important leadership roles
  • Develop closer ties to the community
  • Help the community meet its goals

Learn and Serve America marked a decade and a half of outstanding achievement and progress in service-learning at its 15th Anniversary Symposium and Gala Celebration held December 1, 2005, in Washington, DC. The day-long symposium brought together a variety of voices to share experiences and perspectives and plan for the future.
