Support Services > Advising > Gen Ed Requirements General Education RequirementsGeneral Education requirements are foundation courses within a program of study that help students acquire knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking that contribute to lifelong learning. Students new to college can begin taking General Education courses while exploring their interest before committing to a program of study. General Education requirements may consist of Written Communication, Mathematical or Logical Thinking, World Civilization, Oral Communication, Foreign and Hawaiian Language, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences courses. The General Education requirements, however, do vary between programs of study in breadth as in the Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts or in depth as in the Associate in Science and Associate in Technical Studies degrees. Associate degree programs of study are divided into (1) General Education requirements and (2) program or area requirements. Detailed descriptions of the various programs of study can be located in the KCC Catalog. When selecting courses that meet the General Education requirements students should consider courses that will complement the program of study or personal area of interest. Students transferring to the University of Hawai`i at Manoa will find the Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts helpful toward receiving a baccalaureate degree. Students who entered the University of Hawai`i system fall 2001 or later follow a different University of Hawai`i at Manoa general education core and graduation requirements track than students who entered spring 2001 or earlier. Please see a Liberal Arts academic advisor/counselor for further information
