Campus Resources

Kapi`olani Community College (KCC) provides many services and activities to assist students. Students are encouraged to ask for assistance and to use these services.

Associated Students of Kapi’olani Community College (ASKCC) Student Congress
All students enrolled at KCC comprise the ASKCC student body. Students enrolled at KCC and have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, are eligible to run for an at-large seat on the ASKCC Student Congress annually in the spring semester for the next academic year. The at-large candidates who are elected in spring will elect the officers of Student Congress at its initial meeting in the fall semester when the full Student Congress body meets including representatives from registered KCC student clubs. The Student Congress is the official channel between students and the College administration in the areas of College governance, student rights, academic regulations, curriculum development, instruction, support services, co-curricular activities, and all fees assessed by the college to students, including tuition. Board of Student Activities (BOSA)
The Board of Student Activities (BOSA) oversees the CO-curricular student activities program at the College. The mission of the program is to complement the academic programs and to enhance students’ overall experiences through development of, exposure to, and participation in social, cultural, intellectual, service, and governance programs. The primary goal of BOSA is based on the theme of “Learning by Doing.” Students are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the student activities program. Interested students may obtain more information at the Office of Student Activities in ‘Ohi’a 101 or call 808.734.9582.

Board of Student Publications (BOSP)
The Board of Student Publications publishes:

  • Kapi’o, the weekly student newspaper;
  • Diamond Journal, essays written by students in English classes;
  • Horizons, a journal of Asian-Pacific writing and art;
  • Spectrum, a magazine featuring the best of student writing and art; and
  • Ku Nani, the creative writing magazine.

The BOSP also sponsors readings and writing contests to encourage student writers. If interested in submitting articles, art, and/or participating in the publication process, contact the Kapi’o advisor at the Kapi’o Office in Lama 119, 808.734.9120. The publications are supported by student publications fees and advertising.

The College offers a full range of counseling services including academic, personal, and career counseling. Additional special services include support for pre-college and developmental students, international students, students who are single parents, Native Hawaiian vocational education students, and students with disabilities.

Job placement services provide a valuable link in the partnership between KCC and the business community. The staff assists current students and alumni in preparing for and securing relevant positions through resume and interview skills workshops.

Employment opportunities are kept current on the KCC Jobs site. The site lists many available off-campus jobs for Kapi’olani students. A referral service is also provided. On campus positions are also available through the Personnel Office in ‘Ilima 208. Students who qualify for the Federal Work Study program fill many of the on campus positions.

The Kekaulike Information and Service Center is a convenient, one-stop information and service center with comprehensive services previously available in the offices of Admissions, Records and Registration, Financial Aid, and Cashier. Students will receive assistance with application for admissions, registration and registration changes, transcript requests, verification of enrollment, financial aid, and student account information. Students will also be able to make payments at the cashier’s window.

The MKC provides transfer and career counseling, academic advising, and career testing. These coordinated activities are designed to assist students in the various phases of academic development, career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation. The MKC also houses transfer advising information and career resource materials for student and faculty use. Students are encouraged to visit the MKC during their first semester and to make frequent use of the services throughout their years at the College.

Mediation services are available on campus for students, faculty and staff. Mediation recognizes conflict as a natural and potentially positive part of a dynamic educational process. The goal of mediation is to resolve conflicts in a productive atmosphere of respect and open communication.

The KCC Mediation Center can provide trained student and faculty mediators to help parties identify, address and hopefully resolve disputes that may arise for students and faculty at KCC. The emphasis is on bringing parties together to address issues of common concern and create solutions that work for them.

Native Hawaiian Vocational Education Project

Kulia Ma Kapi’olani, the Native Hawaiian Project, is federally funded through the Native Hawaiian Vocational Education Program of ALU LIKE Inc. The goal of the project is to increase the recruitment and retention of Native Hawaiian vocational education students in the community colleges. “Native Hawaiian” is defined as any individual whose ancestors were natives of the area that now comprises the State of Hawai’i, prior to 1778. Kulia Ma Kapi’olani services include academic advising, personal and career counseling, and financial aid information and support.

This program is federally funded to assist eligible students seeking education in a non-traditional field of occupation. Nontraditional careers are defined as a job market, which has less than 25% of a gender represented in the occupation. This office is currently working to increase the recruitment and retention of males in the Nursing, Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs. This office plans future work with the females in the Business, Hotel Management, Culinary Arts, and Legal programs. Services include career and personal counseling, community and professional networking, career/life planning seminars, financial aid/scholarship information, and life skills workshop. On Campus Employment
The following types of programs provide opportunities for on campus employment to qualified students:

  • Federal Work Study Program (FWS). Provides part-time employment to qualified financial aid recipients. A minimum half-time enrollment (6 or more credits) is required. Student may earn only up to ceiling amount as established by the Financial Aid Office.
  • Student Employment. Provides on-campus employment during the academic year and vacation periods. A minimum half-time enrollment (6 or more credits) is required.

Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing may receive the following support services:

  • Application, orientation, and registration assistance;
  • Academic, personal, and career counseling by a counselor fluent in American Sign Language;
  • Interpreters for any credit or noncredit class, workshop, or campus activity;
  • Notetakers and tutors.

An intensive preparatory program taught in American Sign Language has been developed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals desiring information about the intensive preparatory program or other services may contact the College at 808.734.9210 (V/TTY) or by using the text Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) relay service at 808.643.8833. Campus TTY locations are printed on the campus map.

Single Parents and Displaced Homemakers Program

This program is federally funded to assist eligible single parents and displaced homemakers to gain marketable skills through vocational education. Services include academic, career, and personal counseling; referral networks; career/life planning seminars; financial aid; child care information; and workshops/activities.

A single parent is an individual who is unmarried or legally separated from a spouse, and has a minor child or children for which the parent has custody or is pregnant. A displaced homemaker is an individual who has worked primarily without pay to care for the home and family and for that reason has diminished marketable skills and has been dependent on public assistance or on the income of a relative, but is no longer supported by such income.

Transfer Advising
Kapi’olani Community College offers the general education requirements for most 4-year colleges and universities, locally and on the mainland. KCC is part of the University of Hawai’i system, thus transferring to the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, University of Hawai’i-West O’ahu, and/or University of Hawai'i at Hilo is a smooth process.

Students interested in transferring to a 4-year college or university should make an appointment with one of the Liberal Arts counselors by calling 808.734.9247, email asc@hawaii.edu, or visit them in ‘Iliahi 113 Monday through Friday, 8:00-4:30p.m. Transfer resources such as advising sheets and college directories and catalogs are available at the Maida Kamber Center (MCK) for Career & Transfer Services in Ilima 104.
