Services for Students with Disabilities
at Kapi'olani

The Special Student Services Office (SSSO), Ilima 105B provides support services to students with documented disabilities on campus. Auxiliary aids, support personnel such as notetakers, readers, scribes and mobility aides are available through this Office. We are:

  1. The TRIO, Student Support Services Project, a federally funded project that assists students who are low-income, first generation in college and/or with disabilities. Counselors assist each student toward the successful completion of their academic program.
  2. The Gallaudet University Regional Center provides support to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing student at KCC as well as the Deaf community. The Intensive Preparatory Program for Deaf students has been designed as a full immersion program. Eligible students are exposed to various experiences, while improving and increasing their language abilities.
  3. The Campus Counselor for Students with Disabilities coordinates all of the support services in SSSO. To qualify for the following services, students with disabilities must provide documentation of their disability to SSSO. Some of the services and disability accommodations provided by SSSO include:

    • common application form assistance
    • academic, personal and career counseling
    • financial aid advisement
    • notetakers, readers and scribing support
    • sign language interpreters
    • alternate formats of materials
    • adapted software for computer access
    • accessible tables and chairs
    • liaison/referral to community agencies
    • academic support and monitoring
    • priority registration assistance

Please call SSSO, 734-9552 (V/TTY) to make an appointment with any one of the counselors for more information. SSSO office hours are 8:00am - 4:30pm. Information on specific services for persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing can be obtained by directly calling Gallaudet University Regional Center, 734-9210 (V/TTY).
