FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

The priority deadline is April 1 for the next academic year. Applications and all required documents completed after the deadline will be considered on a first come, first served basis until funds are depleted and are subject to program awarding guidelines.

WHO MAY APPLY

  1. You must be a CLASSIFIED student seeking a degree or certificate program (approved for Title IV funding by Department of Education) at Kapi’olani Community College (KCC) and generally enrolled at least half-time, 6 credits. Applicants who are Unclassified, Nurse’s Aid Training, Home Care Operators (examples of programs which are not approved for Title IV funding but not limited to) will NOT be eligible for financial aid.
  2. You must meet the requirements of KCC’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. Please refer to the policy for specific terms and conditions.
  3. You must be a U.S. citizen or national, citizen of the Trust Territories of the U.S., or an eligible non-citizen.
  4. Distance Education Students: Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits at KCC. You must specify this on your Institutional Supplemental Form (ISF) and complete the DE Authorization Form.

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and mail it in the pre-printed envelope provided with the FAFSA or apply on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Be sure to:
    • Read instructions carefully
    • Complete ALL sections of the application.
    • List KCC'S School Code, 001613, in order for our institution to receive your information electronically
    • Use a BLACK PEN or a #2 pencil and print clearly (if completing a paper FAFSA)

    We highly recommend filing the FAFSA on-line since there are less chances for errors and we will receive your electronic results in approximately two weeks.

    If completing a paper FAFSA, we will receive your electronic results generally within four weeks from when you mail your FAFSA to the Central Processing Center (CPS) of the U.S. Department of Education (ED). At the same time, CPS will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). Please read your SAR carefully. If the information is not correct, please make corrections and re-submit it to CPS.

  2. Complete and submit the Institutional Supplemental Form (ISF) to KCC's KISC at the address listed below.

OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS

*Academic Transcript Evaluations: You must submit all official academic transcripts for all schools attended to the KISC, Records Section and complete a Transcript Evaluation Request Form. If your transcripts are not received and evaluated, your financial aid may be delayed.

**You will be notified by mail if other document(s) are necessary to complete your financial aid application. You may also check the status of your financial aid on-line at http://myuhportal.hawaii.edu/. If your financial aid application is incomplete, pending, or you did not meet the priority deadline (April 1), you MUST RELY ON YOUR OWN RESOURCES to pay for registration, books, supplies and other expenses. Financial aid applications will be considered on a first come first serve basis (chronologically based on the date all of the documents required were submitted).
** PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR TAXES UNLESS THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE HAS REQUESTED**

Verification Worksheet
Applicants and/or their parents who were selected for verification by the federal processor or the Financial Aid Section. The information previously reported on the FAFSA must be verified before any financial aid is disbursed.

Military Information Form
Members of the military or their dependents may need to submit the Military Information Form. Forms are also available at the Kekaulike Information and Service Center (KISC).

Ability to Benefit Form
Applicants who indicated on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that they have not graduated from high school, received a General Education Development (GED) certificate, or you left this question blank. To be eligible for financial assistance, you must have a high school diploma, GED certificate, or pass a U.S. Department of Education approved test (e.g. COMPASS test), or have completed home schooling that state law treats as a home or private school.

Appeal for Special Circumstance Form
If you/your family have unusual circumstance(s) (i.e., divorce, loss of your employment/income, etc.) and your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) does not reflect your current financial situation.

Distance Education Authorization Form
Applicants taking at least 6 credits at Kapi'olani Community College, KCC is your home institution, and will be concurrently enrolled at another UH system school may be eligible for financial assistance. You must meet with an academic advisor to complete this form to confirm that the credits will transfer back to KCC towards your current degree you are seeking.

Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship (ZKHEME)
For bonafide residents of Hawaii only. Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits. Requires a separate application, personal statements and a letter of recommendation. Applications available upon request at the KISC or by clicking below:

Federal Pell Grant (FPELL)
A federal grant for students who have not received a Bachelor's Degree.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) A federal grant for students with exceptional financial need (priority given to Federal Pell Grant recipients). Student must not have received a Bachelor's Degree. Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits..

Hawaii State Incentive Grant (HSIG)
A federal grant that is matched with institutional and state funds. For bonafide Hawaii residents who are eligible for the Pell Grant. Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits.

Hawaii Veterans Memorial Fund (ZKVETM)
For bonafide residents of Hawaii. Must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credits). Requires a separate application, personal statement and a letter of recommendation. Applications available upon request at the KISC or by clicking below:

Ruth E. Black Scholarship (BLACK)
For a student whose parents are employed in the construction industry (engineer, contractor, architect, etc). Must be a bonafide resident of Hawaii and enrolled for at least 6 credits. Requires a separate application. Applications available upon request at the KISC or by clicking below:

Tuition Waivers (TWN, TWHAW, TM, TWPAC)
State funds which cover a portion of your tuition costs for bonafide residents of Hawaii. Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits. Only covers credit courses. Does not cover Pre-College classes (PCM or PCC classes). Criteria for various tuition waivers include need-based, need based with Hawaiian ancestry, merit based-nominated by departments, or program of study.

Pacific Asian Tuition Waivers
The Pacific-Asian Scholarships are intended to support the University of Hawaii?s recognized mission to provide relevant education and training to those who will assume positions of leadership, responsibility and service in the Pacific-Asian region. The priority deadline is May 1st for every academic year.

TWPAC application 2005-2006

LOANS

Federal Perkins Loan (PERK)
A federal loan with an annual simple interest rate of 5%. Interest begins 9 months after student ceases to be enrolled for at least 6 credits. If you qualify, you will be notified about required documents.

Federal PLUS Loans (PLUS)
A federal loan from a private lender for parents of dependent students. Interest rate is variable and repayment begins 60 days after the loan is disbursed. The student must be enrolled for at least 6 credits. [More Information]

State Higher Education Loan (SHEL)
Must be a bonafide resident of Hawaii. A state loan with an annual simple interest rate of 5%. Interest begins 9 months after the student ceases to be enrolled for at least 6 credits. If you qualify, you will be notified about required documents.

Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan (SUB)
A federal need-based student loan from a private lender with the interest subsidized by the federal government while the student is in school at least half-time. The interest rate on the Stafford loans is variable and is subject to change annually in July. Repayment begins six months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. Requires a separate application (in addition to the FAFSA). Students must complete a stafford entrance interview, Stafford Loan Request Form, and a Master Promissory Note online. [More Information]

Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan (UNSUB)
A federal non-need based student loan from a private lender with interest that is not subsidized by the federal government while the student is in school at least half-time. Interest beings accruing upon disbursement of the loan funds. The interest rate on the Stafford Loans is variable and is subject to change annually in July. Requires a separate application (in addition to the FAFSA). Students must complete a stafford entrance interview, Stafford Loan Request Form, and a Master Promissory Note online. [More Information]

Alternative Loans
Private, alternative loans are another option to consider for financing education. Alternative loans are designed to help students with educational expenses that exceed other financial aid such as grants, scholarships, work study and federal loans. FAFSA is not required. Alternative loans are credit based; therefore, a co-signer may be needed. [More Information]

EMPLOYMENT

Federal Work Study Program (FWS) The FWS program provides jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. The program encourages community service and work related to a student?s course of study. Student must monitor earnings based on FWS award. Must be enrolled for at least 6 credits.
