Admission > Holomua Holomua Department - Student Success Program WHAT IS HOLOMUA? The Holomua Student Success Department provides basic skills and developmental instruction for college students who place into PCC 20, ENG 21V, ENG 22, PCM 23, MATH 24, MATH 25 and/or MATH 97. Through classroom instruction, tutoring, counseling support, computer assisted instruction, and group learning activities, the program is designed to meet the needs of the underprepared college student. While students acquire basic competencies in reading, writing, and mathematics, they also learn the importance of being active and responsible learners. Study skills and shared learning activities are also integrated into the curriculum. WHO DO WE SERVE? Applicants new to the college who do not have previous college course work in English and mathematics are required to take the COMPASS Placement Test for English and mathematics. Results of this test will determine the starting course level. If a student places into an English or mathematics course that is below the 100-level, they will be enrolled in Holomua classes.
WHAT KIND OF SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?
In addition to developmental English and mathematics classes, the program includes a college success course, a Summer Bridge program, counseling support services, tutoring services, learning communities, non-credit brush-up workshops, and early outreach initiatives to high schools and community agencies. Classes are small so students receive individual attention and assistance. Pre-college English (PCC 20) and pre-college mathematics (PCM 23) are offered on a Pass/No Pass grading scale. Developmental credited courses in English include Developmental Reading (Eng 21V) and Beginning Composition (Eng 22). Developmental credited courses in mathematics include Elementary Algebra I (Math 24), Elementary Algebra II (Math 25) and Foundations in Math (Math 97). Learning communities include Eng 21V and Eng 22; and Eng 22 and Math 24.
